Our Story

The Helene Foundation was established in 2009 in honor of Helene Davidian, a nurse and devoted mother who lost a courageous battle with cancer in May of that same year. Helene spent her life serving others; she found joy in giving of herself. That’s why her daughter-in-law, Dr. Tracy Davidian, established a foundation in her name - to allow Helene’s passion for serving others to continue for years to come.

Tracy’s goal when she started the Helene Foundation was to help just one family. Since 2009, the Helene Foundation has assisted 308 North Carolina families and over 625 children.

Social workers tell us all the time that we fill a niche for them. We aren’t limited to support a specific cancer, and we focus on services inside the home. Cancer can touch any woman, in any part of the body, at any time and when it does it rocks her world. Cancer diagnoses are on the rise and many women are facing this alone. They are having to make difficult choices to ensure that their family’s needs are being met and many times even that isn’t enough. With our help, her load is lessened which will, in turn, reduce her stress level and allow her to focus on her health and well-being, while allowing the family to maintain as much normalcy as possible. Due to the COVID pandemic, women were avoiding going to the doctor, so symptoms may have been ignored, or left untreated. Now, the referrals we are receiving are later staged cancer diagnoses, which upends the family even more, causing not only a greater need for our services, but also the number of needs within the family is greater which results in higher expenses for each family. We are actively assisting 16 families and 35 children.

Imagine receiving a dreaded diagnosis of cancer. Now imagine on top of that diagnosis, being too sick to work or not being able to work a full schedule and provide for your family due to limited resources or having no support system in the area at all or becoming newly single because your husband or significant other leaves when hearing the diagnosis because this isn’t what they signed up for—it is happening more and more. Or imagine that you can’t go to your treatments or appointments because you don’t have the money for gas? That is when the Helene Foundation steps in. The Helene Foundation does not have a financial requirement. Our only requirement is the mother must be in active cancer treatment at a Triangle area treatment facility, and there must be children under the age of 18 years old living in the home. We can aid these families through services, so that the lives of the children continue with as much normalcy as possible. These families are struggling. Often, these families are a single mother trying her best to provide for her family. Her added worry over trying to cover the additional expenses or loss of income only adds to her stress level which impacts her overall health. Added stress impacts mothers and families in the best of times, but onto top of a cancer diagnosis, it is immeasurable! There have been many times that a mother tells us she is so grateful for our assistance because now she doesn’t have to choose between putting food on the table or going to her treatments and appointments. The first time you hear those words it takes your breath away.

Our goal is for the children to be able to continue life as close to normal as possible too. In addition to food, house cleaning and tutoring, we have paid for children’s activities, so they are able to continue the path they have started; services such as band fees for high school students, gift cards for new school clothes, new basketball shoes for a student who made the high school team or covering the cost of summer camp just to name a few.

The Helene Foundation focuses on the NOW and works to find ways to assist a family with their needs NOW.
