What We Do

Mission

The Helene Foundation provides immediate support to mothers fighting cancer to positively impact families. Our goal is for the family to maintain as much normalcy as possible during this trying time. We assist women who are in active treatments at Triangle area cancer treatment facilities.

What We Do

The Helene Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families with mothers actively undergoing cancer treatments. We are mission driven, and we are nimble enough to provide assistance when it is most crucial – immediately. Because each family has a different story, the services that we provide are uniquely tailored to the needs of each family. Essentially, the Helene Foundation provides essential services to families where the mother is receiving cancer treatment at a Triangle area facility.

Since its founding in 2009, the Helene Foundation has made a difference

260 Families

The Helene Foundation has had the privilege of working with more than 260 families in central North Carolina

525 children

Within those 260 families, the foundation has touched the lives of more than 525 children.

Types of Assistance Provided

We look at each family individual to determine the best way to make this difficult time easier. A few of the services we have provided in the past include:

  • family meals delivered to the home

  • housecleaning

  • child-care

  • tutoring services for children

  • assistance with transportation costs to medical appointments and treatments

  • covering the costs of children’s activities

How We Do It

The Helene Foundation is only operational because of our amazing donors, supporters and community partners who support our mission. Our volunteers are also the ones who are working with the mothers and their families to ensure they are getting the support they need so they can focus on their treatment.
The Helene Foundation does not receive any government funding or is supported by large cancer organization. Funds raised in our community stay in our community to assist women and families in our community.

Why We Do It

The Helene Foundation was established in 2009 in honor of Helene Davidian, a nurse and devoted mother who lost a courageous battle with cancer in May of that same year. Helene spent her life serving others; she found joy in giving of herself. That’s why the Davidian family established a foundation in her name - to allow Helene’s passion for serving others to continue for years to come.

FAQs

  • All women with dependent children under the age of 18 years old living in the home and who are receiving cancer treatment at a Triangle area facility are eligible for referral. Acceptance is based on our level of available funds, the immediate need in the family, and the ages/number of children in the family, as well as any special circumstances. Families that are not accepted during a particular month are placed on our Waiting List for future consideration

  • We are not a cookie-cutter organization. Women are affected by all kinds of cancers, and we work with moms regardless of their specific type of cancer diagnosis. Cancer can touch in part of the body at any time, so we are not cancer specific. We assist moms facing ALL types of cancers.

  • Referrals must be made by a hospital professional, a friend or family member. Please visit the referral page to fill out a form and find out more about the process.

  • Upon acceptance, the mother and her family are sponsored for a six-month period. Should the mother lose her fight with cancer, the family continues to receive assistance until their six months are complete. Many times, we have even extended the length of time they receive support.

  • While our volunteers don’t physically provide the services, we work closely with trusted vendors who do.
